Border security is tightened in Dumaguete as the ASF spreads to a nearby town.

African swine fever (ASF) instances have been detected in another town. Thus the mayor of this provincial capital of Negros Oriental, Felipe Antonio Remollo, ordered on Friday that border controls be tightened in the city.

In response to reports of swine mortality in the nearby Sibulan municipality, Dwight Arnaiz Sr., the officer in charge of the city agriculture office, said in an interview that ASF checkpoints had been put up at strategic entry and exit points in this capital.

To make sure that no pigs from Sibulan and Dauin town, where the province’s first ASF cases were reported, can enter this capital, police, and barangay officials have been contacted.

He explained in Cebuano: “Pigs from these towns are not permitted in Dumaguete, but pigs from other towns and cities are permitted as long as they get a certificate from their city or municipal veterinary offices stating that they are ASF-free.

Arnaiz also mentioned that blood samples from pigs were also obtained from the city’s slaughterhouse for laboratory analysis.

In at least three sites where swine deaths were reported, and laboratory samples revealed ASF-positive results, Sibulan Mayor Jose Abiera ordered “the urgent need for the culling of pigs” on Thursday.

These locations were named Barangay Tubtubon’s Purok Apitong, Barangay Boloc-boloc’s western section, and Barangay Magatas’ southern section.

Belinda Villahermosa, the provincial veterinary officer, stated in a briefing on Friday that culling within a 500-meter radius of the ASF-affected areas will start as soon as the burial site’s excavation is complete.

According to Villahermosa, depopulation in Sibulan town will start as soon as 50 to 60 pigs have been profiled, while at least 300 pig heads have already been killed in Dauin.

As preliminary research indicated that the ASF cases in Dauin were caused by pigswill arriving from the city market here, she urged hog farmers to stop feeding their pigs will.
