Duterte will attend the APEC meeting via video conference.
On Friday night, President Rodrigo Duterte will attend the 2021 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Informal Leaders’ Retreat with other global leaders (Manila time).
Duterte would join the renowned gathering via video conference, according to a statement from the President’s Office.
“The President will participate in a high-level conversation with his APEC colleagues on minimizing the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic and possibilities for cooperation to expedite economic recovery,” according to the statement.
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, and Michael Ryan, Executive Director of the World Health Organization, are scheduled to update the leaders on global economic and health responses to the epidemic.
Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russian Federation, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States of America, and Vietnam are among the 21 member economies of the APEC.
The Retreat, which will be led by New Zealand, is one of the most anticipated events on the APEC agenda for 2021.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stated, “This is the first time in APEC history that leaders have convened an exceptional meeting at the leaders’ level, and it shows our willingness to navigate together out of the Covid-19 epidemic and economic crisis.”
Arden pointed out that the APEC economies had seen their worst year since World War II, with 81 million jobs destroyed.
She emphasized that collaborative action is critical to accelerating the region’s economic recovery.
“Our area has already reacted in important ways, including eliminating obstacles to the efficient delivery of vaccinations and associated goods,” Ardern added, “but there is still more work to be done to get through the crisis.”
She said that leaders would exchange information in order to improve the region’s common knowledge of Covid-19’s health response and create a “collaborative economic response.”
The APEC has been reacting to the pandemic with a variety of policy instruments that address many of the health and economic crisis’s pain points, including vaccinations, critical commodities and services, structural change, and the return of safe and smooth cross-border travel.
