Since the beginning of the year, the Philippine Genome Center has seen a rise in the number of Omicron variant instances across the country.

PGC Executive Director Cynthia Saloma stated the majority of the local samples sequenced in January had the Omicron variation, notably in the National Capital Region, in a televised public briefing Thursday (NCR).

“If there are Delta variant cases, pangilan-ngilan lang (If there are Delta variant instances, only a few), it’s really simply Omicron starting in 2022,” she explained.

She went on to say that the same pattern may be found in other sections of the country.

On Thursday, the Department of Health announced 618 new Omicron variant cases (497 local cases and 121 returning overseas Filipinos) and 35 new Delta variant cases.

So far, there have been 1,153 verified Omicron variant instances, while there have been 8,647 confirmed Delta variant cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) previously said that, like in other countries, the Omicron version of the coronavirus may soon supplant Delta as the prevalent variant in the country.

The WHO further urged the public not to disregard the Omicron variant as “moderate,” despite the fact that it appears “less severe” than Delta.
