The PNP intends to take action against black market dealers of vital medications.

In the wake of a surge in coronavirus infections, the Philippine National Police (PNP) announced on Friday that all of its operating units have been activated to locate and arrest unethical vendors engaging in hoarding and other unlawful actions on the sale of vital drugs.

“Selling these pharmaceuticals outside of licensed pharmacies can be extremely risky to the general public. “The Food and Drug Administration has already urged people to only buy drugs from FDA-approved retailers,” said PNP commander Gen. Dionardo Carlos.

Violators will face appropriate criminal charges under existing FDA regulations, which will be increased by law infractions committed while the country is in a state of a national health emergency, he added.

Carlos stated that the PNP will look into how consumers are persuaded to buy products from shady companies that cannot show proof of business registration or authorization to sell regulated goods.

“It’s also critical that the PNP coordinates with other government organizations to determine how much cheaper these things are than those sold in genuine retailers,” he added.

President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the police to detain and arrest black market vendors of these critical commodities.

According to him, the PNP has the authority to keep them for 34 hours for inquiry and summary inquest processes.

Alert Level 4 is approaching.

Meanwhile, Carlos stated that they are preparing for an escalation to Warning Level 4, the second most severe of the five-tiered alert system.

The provinces of Bataan, Batangas, Cagayan, and Zambales, as well as Baguio City, Dagupan City, Santiago City, Isabela; Angeles City; Olongapo City; Lucena City; Naga City; Iloilo City, and Lapu-lapu City, were all placed under a harsher Alert Level 3 starting Sunday.

“We will follow the lead of the NCR (National Capital Region), which began implementing Alert Level 3 on Monday, January 3.” So far, everything has gone according to plan. We made sure that all of our police officers were well-versed in the rules. If this does not help to reduce the number of Covid cases in their area, a stronger health protocol may be enforced in their local government unit,” he added.

Persons under the age of 18, those over the age of 65, those with comorbidities, and pregnant women must remain at home during Alert Level 4.

At addition, on-site capacity in businesses and government buildings is restricted.
