Army personnel was directed to dismantle private armed groups.

Lt. Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., commander of the Philippine Army (PA), has ordered all military units to destroy private armed organizations as part of preparations to ensure a peaceful and orderly election on May 9.

On Monday, at the PA headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, Brawner gave this order during the first Army-wide command conference of the year.

“Let us look into eliminating private armed groups in order to secure calm and orderly elections.” Let me remind you of our two solemn responsibilities in the upcoming elections: to vote and to guarantee that elections are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner. He stated, “We will not allow party politics or military adventurism.”

Brawner urged troops to eliminate private armed organizations and other peace breakers that constitute a security danger to the elections during his visit to the Maguindanao-based 6th Infantry Division last week.

He also advised politicians to avoid paying the Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army for a “permission to campaign” during the campaign season.

“We will work closely with the Commission on Elections and other relevant organizations to create a safe and secure environment in which people can vote freely, thus respecting the sanctity of the ballot,” Brawner said.

He also urged soldiers to remain apolitical during the next elections.

“All soldiers are directed to take a nonpartisan stance on politically contentious subjects and to support electoral candidates and political parties participating in elections,” he said.

Brawner also advised troops to be aware of how PA professionals should handle themselves on social media. He advised them to stay away from politically oriented, contentious, and fraudulent posts when posting, liking, sharing, and commenting.

Furthermore, Brawner urged troops to follow the gun restriction guidelines of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) throughout the election period, which runs from January 9 to June 8.

Soldiers can carry and possess firearms while conducting official responsibilities throughout the 150-day election period, according to Resolution 10728 of the poll body.

“Exercise your right to vote and ensure that the upcoming elections are free and fair.” “Local absentee voting is strongly encouraged for troops who will be performing poll duty,” Brawner added.
