Enough electricity for the May elections: DOE

The Department of Energy (DOE) has guaranteed the public that enough electricity will be available for the May 9 elections.

In a news conference on Tuesday, DOE director Mario Marasigan said the projection is contingent on the launch of GNPower Dinginin 2’s first commercial operation, which has a capacity of 668 megawatts (MW).

“We can show you that for the entire year, there are no potential yellow or red alerts,” Marasigan said.

However, given the frequency of forced outages in recent years, the red alert may be issued two weeks after the election, he noted.

According to Marasigan, the DOE and the Energy Task Force Election identified potential remedies if GNPower Dinginin 2’s commercial operation is delayed.

“We must acknowledge that even if the commercial operation of GNPower Dinginin 2 is delayed, by April, they will have already begun testing and commissioning, and at least 400 megawatts will be available on the grid,” he stated.

The SMC Mariveles power plant, with a capacity of 150 MW, is also expected to be operational, according to Marasigan.

“Another option is to examine whether we can optimize the Luzon-Visayas link,” he said, adding that “up to 350 MW would still be available.”

The Energy Task Force Election, according to DOE Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella, will be working and collaborating closely to ensure that there will be no power outages on election day.

DOE, the National Electrification Administration, the National Power Corporation, the National Transmission Corporation, the Philippine National Oil Company, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation, the Philippine Electricity Market Corporation/Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines, and Manila Electric Company make up the task force.
