Even in the midst of the more contagious Omicron, the municipal authorities announced on Friday that the more virulent Delta form of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has remained a concern.

“The city government proved that the more virulent variant, the Delta variant, had remained to be a threat in the city,” city information office chief Aileen Refuerzo said in an interview, “which Mayor Benjamin Magalong had assumed after the city’s Covid-19 deaths rose in the past days amid the surge caused by the less severe Omicron variant.”

She stated in the Philippine Genome Center’s report dated January 25 that the total variations of concern (VOC) discovered in this city from the samples provided are as follows: 117 Alpha; 52 Beta; 222 Delta; and 9 Omicron.

“Four of the five Delta instances that were recently reported recovered, while one died,” Refuerzo said.

According to the municipal government’s latest Covid-19 news, 31 people died in ten days between January 18 and 27, increasing the overall number of deaths in the city to 764 since March 2020.

During the same time period, the city documented 4,449 new cases.

In the last quarter of 2021, this city experienced a significant number of deaths owing to the Delta variety, resulting in overcrowding in hospitals and isolation units.
