PRRD intends to build on the success of the first ‘Bayanihan, Bakunahan’ event.
President Rodrigo R. Duterte is hoping for a repeat of the first round of the country’s simultaneous immunization effort against Covid-19, which took place from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3.
During the inaugural “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” national vaccination days, Duterte stated the government was able to administer 10.2 million shots across the country in a pre-recorded public address aired Monday night.
He called the figure a “great victory” in the country’s fight against Covid-19, thanking doctors and other volunteers who participated in the five-day event.
“I’d like to thank the physicians, volunteers, and all. Of course, [Health] Secretary [Francisco] Duque and [Vaccine Czar] Secretary [Carlito] Galvez. I thank you on behalf of the Filipino people,” he said.
Duterte said he is especially eager on repeating the feat during the second round of ‘“Bayanihan, Bakunahan” days.
“We will have a second round of Bayanihan, Bakunahan from December 15 to 17. I hope that would have the same success,” he continued.
Earlier, Malacañang said the national government is exploring measures to improve the upcoming “Bayanihan, Bakunahan” including accepting walk-ins.
“Siyempre iyong sinasabi namin na mga improvements like accepting walk-ins. But to the process, it’s really up to the LGUs [local government units] and then kung paano iyong proseso – ang pakiusap lang namin ay magkaroon ng sistema even for walk-ins (Of course, we’re arguing there should be improvements like accommodating walk-ins. But to the procedure, it’s actually up to the LGUs and then how the process would be done. Our request is that there should be a system for walk-ins),” said Acting Presidential Spokesperson, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, in a radio interview
He added LGUs are also encouraged to prolong their regular 12-hour operating time until there are still individuals lined up to obtain their jabs.
“Direktiba rin po iyon ng Pangulo, ang sabi nga niya basta may nakapila pa diyan, nandoon pa sa linya, may nag-aantay pa eh huwag ninyo pong isara ang vaccination sites (That’s the President’s directive, he said that until someone is lined up and waiting, don’t close the vaccination site),” he added.
Nograles highlighted that LGUs may also wish to consider expanding their house-to-house vaccination efforts for senior residents and persons with comorbidities.
“Several or many of the LGUs ay gumagawa po ng mga house-to-house. Kung lahat po ng LGUs ay magkaroon ng ganiyang klaseng initiative especially para sa mga senior citizens natin at iyong mga—those with comorbidities, mas maganda po iyan, mas maigi po (Several or many of the LGUs undertake house-to-house immunization. If all LGUs had the same program especially for senior residents and those with comorbidities, it would be even better),” he remarked.
Stronger economy
Meanwhile, Duterte hailed the estimate made by investment banking giant Goldman Sachs that the Philippine economy will expand the quickest in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-5 next year.
In a Nov. 18 research, Goldman Sachs Economics Research estimated the Philippines’ gross domestic product (GDP) growth to hit 7.3 percent, within the government’s 7 to 9 percent target.
Although it remains unknown, he is optimistic that the government would meet its economic ambitions.
“That remains to be seen. We still have to worry about the coming Omicron and how it will influence the population of the Philippines. But the optimism at least is there and the analysts honestly feel that the gross domestic product could achieve more than 7 percent. Sana, sana (I hope so, I hope so) (I hope so, I hope so). This will be a pleasant Christmas for everybody,” he remarked.
