China criticizes the United States’ transfer of armaments to Taiwan.
China slammed the US arms transfer to Taiwan on Wednesday, warning it will take steps to protect the country’s territorial integrity.
In a statement, China’s Defense Ministry said, “The Peoples Liberation Army will take all necessary measures to preserve national sovereignty and territorial integrity, prevent external intervention and separatist attempts, and support reunification.”
On Monday, Washington approved a new USD100 million sale of equipment and services to Taiwan aimed at improving the self-ruled island nation’s missile defense capabilities.
According to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the transaction will include engineering “services support, designed to sustain, maintain, and improve” the island nation’s Patriot Air Defense System (DSCA).
According to a DSCA statement, “the proposed sale will help improve the recipient’s (Taiwan’s) security and assist in sustaining political stability, military balance, economic and prosperity in the area.”
“There is only one China in the world,” Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said, “and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory.”
“National reunification is Taiwan’s future, and Taiwan’s security is dependent on the united efforts of compatriots on both sides of the strait under the one-China concept, not US armament sales to Taiwan,” he added.
The US weaponry supplies “to the Taiwan region of China significantly violate the one-China principle and the specifications of the three China-US joint communiqués,” Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, said during a news conference on Tuesday.
“It seriously jeopardizes China’s sovereignty and security interests, as well as relations between China and the United States, as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.” “China vehemently opposes and condemns this,” he added.
It is President Joe Biden’s second military sale to Taiwan since taking office in January 2021.
Taiwan, an island republic with a population of 24 million people, is claimed by China as a renegade province, but Taipei has maintained its independence since 1949 and maintains diplomatic relations with at least 15 nations.
