NorMin farmers will benefit from a P12.7 million quick response fund provided by the Department of Agriculture.
CITY OF CAGAYAN DE ORO – The Department of Agriculture in Region 10 (DA-10) has granted a total of PHP12,795,000 in quick reaction funds (QRF) to farmers in Northern Mindanao who were severely impacted by typhoon Odette last year.
DA-10 Technical Director Carlota Madriaga said around PHP1.9 million from the total amount was used to purchase fertilizers, PHP7.3 million for soil ameliorants, around PHP1.9 million for assorted vegetable seeds and planting materials through the High-Value Crops Development Program; and PHP1.9 million for livestock in an interview Saturday on the podcast of Cabinet Officers for Regional Development and Security – Northern Mindanao (Cords-10).
“We at DA are not only arguing for inorganic farming, but also for a “balanced fertilization” program,” she stated, implying that organic and inorganic approaches should be combined.
She also stated that repairing the soil’s condition was critical, which is why the budget for soil ameliorants was increased to PHP7.3 million.
Madriaga stated that 50 goats, 1,830 free-range hens, and 3,760 doses of medications and biologics for the animals were purchased.
The DA-10 also provided financial help to farmers through the Survival and Recovery Assistance Program for Rice Farmers (SURE), which has been given PHP75 million and offers beneficiaries a no-interest loan of PHP10,000.
Madriaga further stated that the DA-10 provided 1,000 bags of rice seeds for 1,000 hectares of rice farm and 200 bags of corn seeds for 200 hectares of the cornfield to impacted residents in Caraga.
