Lower unemployment as a result of loosening Covid-19 restrictions: Palace

MANILA – Malacanang on Friday expressed satisfaction with the decrease in the number of unemployed Filipinos in January of this year.

The Philippines’ unemployment rate declined from 6.6 percent in December 2021 to 6.4 percent in January 2022, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

This corresponds to 2.93 million jobless Filipinos, down from 3.27 million in December of last year and 3.96 million in January of this year.

“The Palace applauds the findings of the Philippine Statistics Authority’s January 2022 Labor Force Survey, which show a decrease in the number of jobless Filipinos from 3.96 million in January 2021 to 2.93 million in January 2022. In a press statement, acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar noted, “This indicates a drop of 1.04 million unemployed persons in the country.”

Andanar claims that loosening the limits on the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) has helped the country’s labor force participation.

“With the transition to the Alert Level System and more sections of the country being designated as Alert Level 1,” he continued, “We owe the improvement in the employment situation to the effective recalibration of our tactics.”

The PSA stated in a statement that the country’s employment condition improved from 91.2 percent in January 2021 to 93.6 percent in January 2022.

According to the PSA, the number of employed Filipinos climbed by 1.77 million from 41.25 million in January 2021 to 43.03 million in January 2022.

Following the switch to the most relaxed Alert Level 1 status, Andanar said the country’s economic team estimates that about 170,000 Filipinos will no longer be jobless in the second quarter of 2022.

“Over the next quarter, our Economic Team estimates 170,000 fewer unemployed workers,” Andanar stated.

Andanar also stated that, despite inflationary challenges, the government would continue to provide targeted relief for the transportation and agriculture sectors, as well as unconditional cash transfers to the bottom 50% of households.

Metro Manila and 47 additional locations have been placed on Alert Level 1 till March 31.
