MANILA, Philippines – The Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed an appeal filed by a mechanic from Binangonan, Rizal, who was sentenced to up to 17 years in prison for stealing and selling a car he was meant to repair.

The Supreme Court maintained the Court of Appeals’ ruling from 2020, which affirmed Hubert Salvadora’s conviction of kidnapping by the Binangonan Regional Trial Court Branch 67.

Salvadora’s position that he was orally permitted to sell the vehicle was unsupported by the evidence, according to the Supreme Court, which added that “denial is a negative defense that is self-serving and underserving of weight in law lacking clear and persuasive proof.”

Salvadora was recruited by the owner, Mariden Ringor, to repair the car in her home in Angono, Rizal, in January 2015.

Ringor then went to work, leaving her son in charge of the repairs.

The son went inside to watch television in the afternoon. The car was gone when he walked out again, but he believed the mechanic had just taken it for a test drive.

Ringor later discovered that her car had already been listed for sale on a classified website.
