Ukraine has urged France to enforce evacuation corridors that have been set up.
PARIS (Reuters) โ After Moscow’s evacuation plan failed to let residents out of the besieged city of Mariupol, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged France to continue diplomatic efforts with Russia to implement its planned humanitarian corridors.
In a recent phone chat with French President Emmanuel Macron, Zelenskyy told Macron, “The French initiative on humanitarian corridors from Mariupol must be realized.”
He also spoke on the ongoing talks with Russia, as well as “the track and prospects of the relevance of security guarantees.”
According to officials from the French Presidency, Zelenskyy also urged Macron to engage with Moscow to extend the humanitarian cease-fire. Macron underlined French efforts for a cease-fire and the resettling of displaced residents within Ukraine, according to the article.
After Russian President Vladimir Putin determined that the plan “at this time” could not be implemented, France called off a joint humanitarian operation with Turkey, Greece, and international organizations to evacuate residents in the southern city of Mariupol.
Under the auspices of the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, Moscow declared a local cease-fire on Thursday and a humanitarian corridor from Mariupol to Zaporizhzhya via the Russian-controlled port of Berdyansk on Friday at 10 a.m. Moscow time. The Red Cross warned late Friday evening that evacuating Mariupol was “impossible.”
In an interview with BFMTV, Sergei Orlov, deputy mayor of Mariupol, also regretted the failure of the evacuation process. He accused Russia of obstructing aid convoys, stopping Ukrainians from entering the city, and preventing trapped inhabitants from fleeing.
Orlov recounted the dire plight of the residents, who are starving due to a lack of food, water, and medicine, as Russian soldiers shelled the city, leaving it in ruins. According to him, some people were compelled to eat their pets in order to survive.
In Mariupol, around 150,000 people are in a critical state.
