MANILA, Philippines — Senator Aquilino ‘Koko’ Pimentel III announced on Wednesday that he is in talks with the chairs of the Senate Committees on Finance, Ways and Means, and Blue Ribbon to launch a Senate investigation into the Marcos family’s alleged unpaid PHP203 billion tax estate.

In an interview with CNN Philippines, Pimentel stated that the investigation can be completed before or after the elections.

“Yes, time is still on your side. We have the entire month of April and the first week of May to work with. Pwede naman po, and if hindi talaga kakayanin sa time before the election, we’ll do it afterward. Pimentel also stated that he is waiting for Senate President Vicente Sotto III to name a committee to deal with the matter.

Pimentel, on the other hand, claimed he had read some statements from his colleagues on the resolution he had filed.

He stated, “I believe the Senate President himself supports the resolution.”

In an interview on Monday, Sotto, one of the vice-presidential candidates, said he is still undecided about attending the Senate session.

Senator Panfilo Lacson, his running companion, has also stated that he will not be present if the hearing is held.

Pimentel called for a probe into the Marcos family’s alleged unpaid estate tax in Senate Resolution No. 998, which attempted to direct the competent Senate committee to launch an investigation in support of the legislation.

He also plans to invite BIR officials from 1990 to the present, as well as the Marcos heirs, including former first lady Imelda Marcos and her son, presidential hopeful Bongbong Marcos, as resource speakers.
