MANILA, Philippines — Sara Duterte, a vice presidential candidate, promised on Sunday to repeat Davao City’s programs for people with disabilities (PWDs) by giving more jobs and vocational training.

She reiterated how the PWDs in Davao City were given priority in terms of business and livelihood during her visit to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) facility in Escopa, Quezon City for a “meet and greet” with the PWDs of Quezon City’s Third District.

She stated that the City Government of Davao places a high priority on the creation of personally managed offices that would immediately respond to the requirements of fellow PWDs.

Daisy Lumalang, 54, an orthopedic impaired since she was 2 years old, said she is grateful to Duterte for being passionate about assisting the needy, particularly the PWD sector, among the attendees at Sunday’s event.

“Malaki po ang pasasalamat naming mga PWD na bumisita si Mayor Sara dito dahil alam namin na tunay ang kanyang malasakit sa lahat — lalong lalo na sa aming mga may kapansanan,” Lumalang added.

“Marami nang mga PWDs na natulungan si Mayor Sara sa Davao City,” she added. Ibig sabihin, ito rin magagawa niya sa buong Pilipinas. Duterte emphasized the need for business security across all industries, calling it the “key to financial stability.”

The Magna Carta for Disabled Persons, or Republic Act 7277, was signed into law in 1992 and is “an act providing for the rehabilitation, self-development, and self-reliance of the disabled person, and their integration into the mainstream of society, and for other reasons.”

She believes that the execution of RA 7277 should be strengthened in order to provide empowerment support to all PWDs in the country.
