CITY OF COTABATO – Despite having the lowest vaccination coverage in the country, active coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases have continued to decline in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The Bangsamoro Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) had only recorded three new illnesses as of Monday, two in Cotabato City and one in Maguindanao.

According to Dr. Amirel Usman, BARMM health director general, the provinces of Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi, as well as the towns of Marawi and Lamitan, have seen zero Covid-19 cases since March 30.

During the same time period, BARMM recorded no fatalities owing to Covid-related disorders.

“The region has been designated as low risk for the last weeks, even months,” Usman said during a news conference on Monday. “On several days, we have zero new infections, sometimes we have one, two, or three cases only,” Usman said.

Most of the hospital beds set aside for Covid-19 cases have been empty, indicating that “our infections are really low presently,” he said.

Since the pandemic was proclaimed in March 2020, the region has recorded 19,761 total cumulative confirmed cases, 688 fatalities, and 19,072 recoveries.

In terms of vaccination, Usman stated the region has a total of 1,179,146 vaccinated people, with 836,000 of them fully vaccinated, or around 28% of the target population of 4 million people in BARMM.

BARMM IATF will perform extensive immunization programs in the following locations from May 5 to 20: Marawi, Sulu, Basilan, Lamitan City, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, and Tawi-Tawi.

During the 15-day special immunization program, BARMM eyeballs inoculated 1,472,917 people.
