Rodante Marcoleta has dropped out of the Senate race.

MANILA โ€“ House Deputy Speaker Rodante Marcoleta has withdrawn from the Senate election on May 9, 2022.

Marcoleta announced his withdrawal from the Senate race in a press release, citing his “bad” pre-election poll ratings.

Marcoleta stated, “The fighter in me should also be brave enough to read the writings on the wall.”

In a recent one-on-one interview with Marcoleta, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte disclosed that he was one of the persons who encouraged the congressman to run for senator.

On April 9, Duterte lauded Marcoleta as a “principled man, highly honest, and a [man] with integrity” at the President’s Chatroom, which aired on state-run PTV-4.

Marcoleta was also praised by Duterte for being the most outspoken legislator against local media giant ABS-CBN Corp’s franchise renewal application.

Marcoleta expressed gratitude to Duterte for his “positive and kind backing” of his senatorial campaign.

He thanked the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), the People’s Reform Party, and the UniTeam for putting him in their senate slates.

“I will be eternally grateful to a number of people who contributed their resources, time, and a great deal of effort to make my remarkable campaign a success. I am grateful to the thousands of volunteers and hundreds of parallel support organizations who believed in my causes and the actions that must be taken for the common good. “All I can hope for is that they will all be understanding and nice,” he remarked.

Despite his retirement, Marcoleta pledged to continue supporting former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara “Inday” Duterte’s UniTeam.

“The BBM-Sara combination epitomizes the politics of unity and working together for the sake of the motherland, despite various political persuasions โ€“ an element that is noticeably absent in other teams,” Marcoleta remarked.

Marcoleta also pledged his “complete and unwavering” support to the UniTeam and PDP-Laban senatorial candidates.

Commissioner George Garcia of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) stated that the poll body’s en banc had already recognized Marcoleta’s ruling.

โ€œConfirmed. In a Viber message, Garcia added, “It was accepted by the Commission en banc earlier.”

Marcoleta, he added, submitted his withdrawal letter on April 21.

“Yes, he came to my office with his withdrawal statement, and I referred him to the law department,” Garcia explained.

Marcoleta’s explanation for withdrawing is “too personal,” according to Garcia.

He continued, “I’m not at liberty to reveal.”

However, a poll official stated that Marcoleta must still file his Statement of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE).

A month after the elections, all candidates must submit their SOCE to the Comelec.
