SEOUL – North Korea claimed 21 more Covid-19 deaths on Saturday, with over 174,400 people nationwide feverish, as its leader Kim Jong-un said his country is in “grave difficulty” owing to the virus’s spread.

After Kim presided over an early-morning politburo meeting to review the nation’s “highest emergency” antiviral system in place, Pyongyang’s state media announced the revised tally compiled the day before.

According to the official Korean Central News Agency, the seminar focused on how to quickly supply and distribute emergency medical supplies (KCNA).

The state emergency epidemic prevention headquarters briefed him on the current scenario, which he termed as “huge turbulence since the country’s establishment,” according to the report.

He asked relevant authorities to learn from other nations’ “successful” coronavirus control efforts, such as China’s.

Between late April and May 13, 524,440 persons in North Korea showed signs of fever, according to the KCNA. 243,630 have been entirely cured, with an additional 280,810 being treated.

The number of deaths attributable to the coronavirus in the North has risen to 27.

Meanwhile, Kim urged people to have “confidence” that the virus problem will be resolved soon, adding that it is not “uncontrollable” because it is limited to select areas that have already been placed under lockdown.

The isolated North announced its first Covid-19 outbreak since January 2020 on Thursday.
