Larry Alcala’s ‘Slice of Life’ stamps is now available at the Philippine Post Office.

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released commemorative stamps honoring cartoonist and National Artist for Visual Arts Larry Alcala, depicting his well-known “Slice of Life” cartoon series, in commemoration of National Heritage Month.

“His comic strips gave us a witty and profound glimpse into Filipino life.” In a news release on Thursday, Postmaster General Norman Fulgencio remarked, “His comics became notorious for challenging readers to discover Mr. Alcala’s face disguised in his illustrations.”

“Viewers are drawn to the scenarios not only because they are relatable morsels of Filipino everyday life, but also because the artist’s well-hidden caricature serves as a fun hunt for Filipinos of all ages,” the agency said in a statement. enjoy. “Alcala was able to capture the wit, resourcefulness, and adaptability with which Filipinos go about their daily lives.”

The “Slice of Life” cartoon series won the Best in Comedy Award in 1988, and was credited with preserving the Filipinos’ ability to laugh at themselves in the face of adversity via the use of art and humor.

“Handy Crafts” from the October 1, 1989 issue is available as an eight-stamp sheet, while “Cooking for a Fiesta” from the September 17, 1989 issue is available as a four-stamp souvenir sheet.

The collection of eight stamps features images of Batangas shell craft producers, Cebu guitar makers, Bohol basket weavers, Bicol blacksmiths, Bulacan mat weavers, Taal embroiderers, and Ilocos potters.

According to Fulgencio, Alacala’s critical and empathetic observations provoked amusement and introspection in Filipinos’ everyday lives.

“Tinulungan po tayo ni Mr. Alcala na más mapansin at maintindihan ang mahahalagang aspeto ng buhay Pilipino,” Fulgencio remarked during the launching ceremony, which was attended by leaders from the National Commission for Culture and Arts and Filipino Heritage Festival Inc.

“Slice of Life” is probably his most well-known cartoon series.

His 1947 serial “Kalabog En Bosyo” was the longest-running serial by a Filipino cartoonist, and it was translated twice into films by late Filipino comedians Dolphy and Panchito. In December 2003, stamps commemorating the cartoon were released.

“Gorio and His Jeepney,” “Aksyong Aksaya,” “Siopaw-man,” and the modern classic “Kikomachine” are among his other works.

“Mahalaga po ang mga selyong ito dahil (These seals are essential because) stamps represent our window to the rest of the world, displaying our country’s rich history and culture.” The Post Office, like our own National Artist Larry Alcala, recognizes and encourages Filipino talents and achievers to do their best, to provide joy, inspiration, and pride to the nation, and to contribute more to the growth of the Philippine economy and nation,” Fulgencio added.

The layout was created by PHLPost in-house stamp designers Ryman Alburadora and Agnes Rarangol.

The Philatelic Counter of the Manila Central Post Office in Liwasang Bonifacio sells stamps, souvenir sheets, and official first-day covers.
