The Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) Carousel Busway will continue to offer free rides for an additional year with the approval of PHP1.4 billion in additional funding from the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

The Special Allotment Release Order (SARO) and the Notice of Cash Allocation (NCA) to cover the additional funding requirements for the extended implementation of the Service Contracting of Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) Program were approved by the agency, according to a press release issued on Tuesday by DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman.

“This deposit of additional funds is our support for President Marcos’ wish to extend the Free Ride program of the Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board until D,” the statement reads.

On his first day in office, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced the extension of the extended free bus travel program till December of this year. It was originally scheduled to terminate on July 31.

“Free rides are a big help and comfort in the wallets of commuters, especially for students and those in the labor force,” Pangandaman said. “Free rides are a great help and comfort in the pockets of commuters.

From September 1 to December 31, the program will accommodate up to 50 million riders.

As it offers financial support to transportation service providers through performance-based rewards, it would also benefit the 628 units of public utility buses (PUBs) that are now affixed to the EDSA Busway Route in Metro Manila.

The free bus ride initiative was designed to make sure that public transit would run effectively and safely in the new normal.

Currently, it aids in easing the significant financial strain placed on consumers by growing prices for products and services.
