PBBM and the commercial sector work on plans for the tourism sector.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. met with the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) on Thursday to examine measures to increase Philippine tourism.

According to a brief video clip posted on the official Facebook page of state-run Radio Television Malacanang, Marcos’ meeting with PSAC’s agenda focused on the tourism sector work plan (RTVM).

On September 29, 2022, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will host a meeting of the Tourism Sector Group of the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) in Malacaan Palace, according to a Facebook post by RTVM.

Malacanang has not yet offered any information on its plans to make the nation’s tourism business more competitive.

In addition to Frederick Go (Robinsons Land Corporation), Roberto Claudio Sr. (Philippine Retailers Association), Rene Limcaoco (Hertz Philippines), Mary Geraldine Polanco-Onganon (Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc.), Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar (Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc.), and Leslie Vanessa Lim (Robinsons Land Corporation), members of the PSAC Tourism Sector Group also attended the meeting, according.

The PSAC’s head convenor Sabin Aboitiz (Aboitiz Group), and member Joji Gotianum Yap (Filinvest Development Corporation) both participated virtually in the meeting, according to RTVM.

Several representatives from the Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and Presidential Management Staff Secretary Ma. Zenaida Angping attended the meeting.

Marcos stated in his first State of the Nation Address on July 25 that his administration would push for the building of additional international airports and road upgrades to draw more tourists and hasten the tourism industry’s recovery in the face of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

Marcos made the promise as he recognized the significance of the tourist sector as a vehicle for economic development and as a sector that creates jobs for the general populace.

According to Philippine Statistics Authority data released on June 28, the tourist industry employed at least 4.9 million people in 2021, up from the 4.7 million people reported in 2020.

With borders essentially shut for the entirety of 2021, the nation only saw 163,879 foreign tourists in 2021. Compared to 2020 arrivals of 1,482,535, this represents an 89 percent decrease.
