France contributes P115 million to the ‘Odette’ rescue effort.
The French government has set aside EUR2 million (about PHP115.5 million) to aid ongoing recovery operations in the Visayas and Mindanao following Typhoon Odette’s devastation.
“France stands beside the Filipino people following the destruction inflicted by Super Typhoon Odette (Rai), which has claimed nearly 400 lives and displaced tens of thousands of people in the Philippines,” the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs stated in a statement.
At least EUR1 million of the funding will be channeled through the French non-governmental organization ACTED and the French Red Cross in collaboration with the Philippine Red Cross, according to the French Embassy in Manila.
“This assistance includes the distribution of thousands of family and hygiene packages, as well as material for the emergency reconstruction of destroyed or damaged dwellings in the provinces of Surigao Del Norte, Palawan, and Bohol,” according to the statement.
In response to the UN’s plea for PHP5.45 billion to help children and families recover from the typhoon’s damage, France will give the remaining EUR1 million to the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The World Food Programme (WFP), UNICEF, and a number of other UN organizations are working on the ground to offer critical aid to the impacted populations.
Last week, the French Ambassador to the Philippines Michèle Boccoz, together with other diplomats and the UN, visited Surigao and other impacted areas to examine the typhoon victims’ situation, which is “still severe and urgent,” according to the World Food Programme.
“Shelter, water and sanitation, protection of the vulnerable, and food are the most pressing demands. We must make certain that people who require assistance receive it “Boccoz remarked.
“Thousands of hygiene kits will be distributed to affected families, as well as assistance in rebuilding their houses. In times of crisis, France stands ready to assist the Philippines “In a separate tweet, she stated.
