A final push by the UN chief at COP27

As the UN Climate Change Conference in Egypt (COP27) comes to a close, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is urging for aggressive climate action, according to a UN spokeswoman on Friday.

According to Farhan Haq, a deputy spokesperson for Guterres, the UN chief met separately in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, with representatives of the European Union, the Group of 77, China, European Commission Vice President Frans Timmermans, and China’s special climate envoy Xie Zhenhua.

He said that Guterres will continue extensive conversations with parties throughout the day. “As the negotiations draw to a conclusion, the (UN) secretary-general urged parties to aspire for maximum ambition on loss and damage and in reduction of emissions,” he said.

“He is pressuring the participants. He has been pressing governments to go above and above since, in the end, they are the ones who must do so “Haq stated.

He claimed that the secretary-general had “made plain what the demands are, what the baseline needs of the international community are.” “There is a certain baseline expectation that we must meet in order to ensure that the earth on which we currently live will remain habitable. But this deal, like all agreements, will undoubtedly be the product of compromise. We hope that compromise will nonetheless produce the strongest endorsement of our efforts to stop global warming.”

On Thursday, Guterres urged the COP27 participants to put an end to blame-laying.

“This is not the time to accuse anyone. The blame game is a surefire formula for conflict, “At a Sharm El-Sheikh press conference, he issued a warning.

The UN chief urged the countries to take action in three crucial areas: responding to loss and damage, reducing emissions, and providing climate funding.
