EU suggests banning Twitter due to content moderation
The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that the European Union has warned Elon Musk that Twitter may be banned if its stringent guidelines for content filtering are not fulfilled.
The top financial publication cited insiders for its claim that EU industry chief Thierry Breton gave Musk the warning during their virtual meeting.
According to the report, Breton gave Musk a list of requirements to follow, including giving up a “arbitrary” method for reintroducing banned users.
The meeting was confirmed by an official statement from the EU.
I appreciate Elon Musk’s declarations that he wants to prepare Twitter 2.0 for the Digital Services Act (DSA). Digital services that connect consumers with products, services, and content are governed by EU legislation. On November 16, it became effective, according to the EU official.
Breton added, “I’m glad to hear that he’s read it attentively and thinks it’s a sensible approach to execute on a global scale.
But let’s also be clear that Twitter still has a lot of work to do, like implementing open user regulations, strengthening content filtering to better safeguard free expression, tackling disinformation head-on, and limiting tailored advertising.
TweetDeck 2.0
Instead of responding to the article, Musk, the Tesla billionaire who completed his $44 billion buyout of Twitter in October, retweeted a post touting Twitter 2.0 and the platform’s “continuing dedication to the public conversation.”
We are a new company starting a new chapter, but our unwavering commitment to this objective has not changed, according to the Twitter Team’s most recent blog post.
“None of our policies have changed,” it stated. Our strategy for enforcing policies will place more emphasis on reducing the reach of offensive content: freedom of speech, but not freedom of expression.
The Trust & Safety team at the business “continues its hard work to keep the platform safe from hateful conduct, abusive behavior, and any breach of Twitter’s standards,” according to the statement.
The message stated: “We will continue to be transparent as we work through this transition phase. We remain committed to providing a safe, inclusive, engaging, and educational experience for everyone. And we will pay attention to you, the individuals who make Twitter what it is: the online marketplace.
Since taking over, the 51-year-old entrepreneur has fired about half of the organization’s 8,000 employees, allowed previously banned users to rejoin the platform, including former US President Donald Trump, and declared an “amnesty” for suspended users, raising concerns about the rise of hate speech and disinformation.
