VP Sara supports initiatives to reforest in opposition to climate change

More trees need to be planted in order to boost carbon sinks and decrease greenhouse gas emissions, according to vice president and secretary of education Sara Duterte.

Duterte emphasized her support for the Climate Change Commission’s (CCC) effort of planting and growing trees in her remarks at the 15th Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week (CCC Week 2022) on November 25.

“The effects of climate change will be very hard on the Philippines. Our biodiversity, food security, and public safety are already being threatened by an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events, a rise in sea level and temperature, and changes in rainfall patterns, she warned.

Duterte emphasized the necessity of boosting the nation’s potential for carbon sequestration through nature-based solutions, particularly through tree planting and growing activities, in order to lessen the effects of climate change.

For the Carbon Neutral Program (CNP) Convergence, the CCC worked with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), and the Society of Filipino Foresters Inc. (SFFI).

The CCC Week kick-off event on November 19 was the most recent program that the agencies and other partner organizations under the CNP Convergence initiated and participated in. At the La Mesa Nature Reserve, 200 Narra, Dao, and Sablot seedlings were planted by the CCC and numerous stakeholders.

Let’s assist President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in his demand for increased tree planting in order to lessen the effects of climate change, boost our nation’s climatic resilience, and promote sustainable development, Duterte said.

Duterte was one of the politicians and leaders who endorsed the 15th Global Warming and Climate Change Awareness Week (CCC Week 2022).

CCC Week 2022, which has the theme “Sama-samang Tumutugon sa Hamon ng Nagbabagong Klima,” unites various climate change and environmental stakeholders in the Philippines in an effort to turn climate change commitments into action in order to make the country more climate-smart and resilient by the year 2050.

The CCC leads the yearly observance every Nov. 19 to 25, which is intended to raise awareness about addressing the repercussions of the changing climate, in accordance with Presidential Proclamation 1667 s. 2008.
