A foundation wants more tree planting to counteract global warming.

The Million Trees Foundation, Inc. (MTFI) has reiterated its plea for all stakeholders in the nation to plant more trees in support of the government’s ongoing forestry initiative as part of its continuous efforts to contain the negative consequences of global warming and climate change.

“We want to grow more trees and plant more of them. The main goal of MTFI is to continue the success of the Annual Million Tree Challenge and to plant trees in significant watersheds, according to a statement sent by the organization’s president and executive director, Melandrew Velasco, to the Philippine News Agency on Wednesday.

Following the country’s observation of Global Warming and Climate Change Awareness Week from November 18–25

A non-profit organization called MTFI has urged all stakeholders to support the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) top priorities in order to combat climate change and maintain water security, particularly in areas with severe water shortages.

In order to ensure the success of reforestation, Velasco explained, “We make sure the tree species we plant are suitable with the type of soil.”

By 2030, MTFI hopes to plant 10 million more trees. Through the Annual Million Trees Challenge (AMTC) of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, it was successful in planting 5.2 million trees between 2017 and 2021 in seven important watersheds that supply Metro Manila and its surroundings with potable water, including Angat, Ipo, La Mesa, Umiray, Laguna Lake, Kaliwa, and Upper Marikina (MWSS).

Reforestation of the watersheds, according to Velasco, improves water security.

On the other hand, retired Gen. Reynaldo V. Velasco, chairman emeritus of the MTFI, stated that it is “our job to care for our environment.”

Increased tree planting will result in more trees that can absorb carbon emissions since trees absorb carbon dioxide, he continued.

To further its reforestation effort, MTFI has teamed with a number of groups and the business community.

One of the top companies in the nation, San Miguel Corporation, is one of its partners.

As part of its multi-year, statewide forestation and carbon capture effort, SMC Power subsidiary SMC Global Power Holdings Corp. (SMCGP) reported the successful planting and growth of approximately five million new trees and mangroves from 2019 to the present.

The company announced that it is extending the project’s scope to include reforestation efforts in the vicinity of its new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities, which make up the first and largest network of its kind in Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

Ramon S. Ang, president, and CEO of SMC, reported that as of October 2022, SMCGP’s “Project 747” effort has produced 5,010,116 upland and mangrove trees over roughly 1,500 hectares of land.

The project’s objective is to plant seven million trees across at least seven provinces, on an area of about 4,000 hectares. Albay, Bataan, Bulacan, Davao Occidental, Negros Occidental, Pangasinan, Quezon province, and Zambales are the eight provinces where SMCGP has so far planted.

According to Presidential Proclamation No. 1667, which President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo issued on November 18, 2008, Global Warming and Climate Change Awareness Week is observed annually from November 19 to November 25.
