A labor union wants a P100 pay increase in the NCR

A labor organization requested a PHP100 salary increase for employees in the private sector from the National Capital Region’s wage board on Monday, citing several urgent and valid reasons.

Rey Almendras, chairwoman of Kapatiran ng mga Unyon at Samahang Manggagawa (Kapatiran), stated that their petition was started on behalf of all minimum wage workers in Metro Manila’s manufacturing, retail/trade, and agricultural sectors.

He stated in a statement that the petition to raise the minimum wage was motivated by the need for minimum wage laborers to make up for the value of their lost wages, deal with rising living expenses, and afford a respectable existence as common workers.

As the country’s inflation rate rose quickly over the past few months, from 2.5 percent in October 2021 to 7.7 percent in October 2022, the group requested that the board develop a new salary order.

He also referenced projections that the inflation rate could increase further in November, reaching as high as 8.2 percent.

They pointed out that a worker working five days a week would only earn PHP11,400 per month at the NCR’s existing minimum wage rate of PHP570.

Evidently, minimum wages are below this poverty line and a long way from meeting the living wage requirements set forth in the Constitution. The current NCR rate, in reality, represents a pitiful 10% of the Filipinos’ aspiration for a “simple and comfortable living,” as described by NEDA in 2015, according to a section of their petition.

Renato Magtubo, another organization official, noted that the PHP100 wage increase is intended to make up for the lost value of the minimum wage for workers.

“The Wage Rationalization Act, also known as Republic Act 6727, has caused employees to suffer injustice for many years. We at the Nagkaisa Labor Coalition have another course to take to right this wrong. We want this law to be overturned and replaced with a new one that has procedures that actually ensure that the living wage that the Constitution guarantees is realized, the man stated.

Additionally, a small picket demonstration was organized in front of the Manila wage board offices to urge the organization to act quickly on its petitions.
