The timing of voter registration depends on the Supreme Court’s decision about the plea in the case of the BSKE reset

An extension of voter registration, according to a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official, will depend on the Supreme Court’s (SC) ruling regarding the petition challenging the postponement of the 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (BSKE) elections.

Voter registration will resume on December 12 and last through January 31, 2023.

“The Supreme Court’s ruling in (Atty. Romulo) Macalintal v. Comelec, in which the legitimacy of Republic Act 11935 is disputed, will serve as the foundation for the expansion of registration. There is a good chance that we will be able to extend the registration period if the SC decides that the election will take place after May 2023, according to Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco in a Laging Handa briefing.

In his appeal, Macalintal requested that the SC direct Comelec to hold the BSKE elections in May of 2020, noting the latter’s declaration that it is ready to hold the delayed elections that month.

Laudiangco remarked that they are not allowed to hold registration months before the scheduled elections if the ruling in favor of the petition is made.

“But there is a ban on registering 120 days before elections, so we may lose out if the election is held before October 2023. Registration to vote is only valid till January 31. This is predicated on the Supreme Court’s upcoming ruling. It can be stretched to be that lengthy, he continued.

The Dec. 5 BSKE was postponed until the final Monday of October 2023 by Republic Act (RA) 11935, which President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. authorized on October 10.

Laudiangco advised everyone who is eligible to vote but is not yet registered to do so in order to take part in the nation’s elections.

“Therefore, we ask the general public to register as soon as feasible. Bring an ID card, complete the online form, and get your biometrics taken. In order to participate in future elections, including BSKE, candidates should register early, he said.
