Consumer group asks NBI for assistance in fighting internet scams

On Monday, a consumer group encouraged the National Bureau of Investigation to keep a closer eye on online con artists who prey on year-end bonuses and incentives received by workers in the public and private sectors.

Action for Consumerism and Transparency in Nation Building (Action), through its secretary general Jake Silo, claimed in a letter to National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Medardo De Lemos that many criminal syndicates are now eyeing workers’ bank accounts during the holiday season when most businesses and governmental agencies release bonuses of their employees.

“We respectfully ask the NBI to begin pursuing these perpetrators. In the weeks leading up to the holidays, we hope that law enforcement makes as many arrests as possible to not only disrupt their network but also to demonstrate the seriousness with which the government is taking action against online financial scammers.

The group argued that NBI should act right away to prevent a repetition of last year when hundreds of people lost their hard-earned money to con artists during the holidays.

According to the report, the situation has become even more serious as millions of workers start getting their 13th month’s pay and other Christmas bonuses, and as abroad Filipinos return home for the holidays carrying their months’ worth of savings.

“In other words, in December, there will be plenty of money to go around. This is the ideal situation for international and regional syndicates to execute the ideal theft, the group claimed.

In the first quarter of the year, 42 percent of respondents in a Statista personal finance study who faced efforts at online fraud reported being the subject of phishing assaults. Additionally, fraud schemes involving money or gift cards were targeted at 38% of the respondents.
