Unlikely to increase pork prices over the holiday season: DA

Given the ample supply, the Department of Agriculture (DA) stated on Monday that a price increase for pork is less likely to occur over the Christmas break.

Rex Estoperez, a DA Deputy spokesperson, stated during a Laging Handa briefing that no significant price changes are anticipated.

“As of right now, there aren’t any frozen, even, baboy karne products available to you. As of right now, the preferences of our community of neighbors are not that. Iyong bagong katay ang preference nila (At the moment, there isn’t a price increase for pork because there is more than adequate supply, including frozen meat. Filipinos, on the other hand, favor fresh meat,” he remarked.

Estoperez claimed that any increase in pork prices would be slight.

“It’s okay to guess about dating kapaskuhan, ayaw. He continued, “We don’t want to be specific, but we hope for an increase that is not too great when Christmas time arrives. Medyo konting pagtaas pero hindi naman sana ‘yung pagtaas na masyadong malaki.

enough supply

The DA emphasized that there is still a lot of fresh and frozen pork available on the market.

‘Yung baboy po, ang supply po nito ay sobrang dami po niyan,’ Iyong karne po natin… Farmgate prices are high, but transportation costs are higher when going to the pamilihan. May incidentals, iyong ating mga namumuhunan dito. Idagdag lang nila, then. However, when it comes to supply, our supply of pork is very high. This is because we have a large number of people working together in the industry. Low farmgate prices apply to it. However, there is a transit fee when it gets to the market. Incidental costs are also incurred by investors. Consequently, this raises the cost. But when it comes to supply, our industry participants say that we have more than enough pork,” he remarked.

Prices for frozen pork remained lower than those for freshly slaughtered pork during this time.

Pig liempo is currently being sold for between PHP265 and PHP300 per kilogram (kg) in Metro Manila, which is less expensive than the PHP290 to PHP390 range for fresh pork liempo.

Frozen pork kasim or pigue is now priced between PHP210 and PHP260 per kilogram, making it more inexpensive than fresh pork, which costs between PHP260 and PHP360 per kilogram.

The National Capital Region’s Marikina Market, Commonwealth Market, and Mega Q-mart in Quezon City have the lowest costs for hog meat.
