During the Christmas rush, the House leader warns against the “PM sent” practice.

In the midst of the holiday shopping frenzy, a House speaker emphasized on Wednesday that Republic Act 7394, sometimes known as the “Consumer Act of the Philippines,” requires online sellers to post price tags on their products.

Online businesses should avoid the “PM sent” practice of disclosing product prices to customers exclusively through private messages, according to Rep. Marcelino Libanan, the House Minority Leader and member of the 4Ps party list. This practice is illegal, he said.

Retailers are forbidden by law from putting any item out for sale to the general public without a price tag in pesos and centavos.

We must emphasize that all businesses are required by law to display price tags on their products for the benefit of all customers or face penalties. No matter if they sell online or offline, this rule applies to all shops, according to Libanan.

According to Libanan, it is also against the law to sell goods for more than what is written on the price tag.

We would ask the Department of Trade and Industry to strictly enforce the price tag requirement in order to protect consumers, Libanan added.

He pointed out that many internet merchants, including those doing business on social media sites, still list their things for sale without including prices.

He continued, “They simply offer images and other information about their products, and then they wait for customers to inquire about the price of the thing they are interested in purchasing.

According to Libanan, the Consumer Act guarantees complete price transparency and protects the general public from any price abuses.

Price tag mandate violators may be sentenced to up to six months in prison, a fine of up to PHP5,000, or both, depending on the circumstances.

Revocation of a business license and permit is an option for repeat offenders.
