Release of freshwater prawns in Batac City
According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), around 45,000 post-larvae prawns were released in five small water-impounding dams in Batac City to guarantee a consistent supply of freshwater prawns in the Ilocos Region.
The so-called post-larvae 21 prawns were reportedly released in Barangays Mabaleng, Pimentel, Batac East, Magnuang, and Dariwdiw, according to senior aquaculturist Vanessa Dagdagan of BFAR Ilocos Norte.
In an interview, Dagdagan stated, “This is a component of our stock enhancement under BFAR’s Balik Sigla sa Ilog at Lawa program. According to her, wild prawns are a highly prized species that sell for a fair price.
This kind of shrimp, locally called “udang,” is quite common in the rivers, lakes, and other tributaries of Locos, Cagayan, and other Northern Luzon provinces. According to Dagdagan, it is also one of the newer prawn products on the market.
Udang is a high-value species that is shipped frozen to markets in the United States and Europe. Due to its size and cheaper price compared to tiger shrimp, it is a well-liked aquatic product there.
It is also regarded as a specialty item when entire and frequently sold alive for aquarium tank displays.
According to BFAR, the country’s substantial inland resources, which include over 250,000 hectares of lakes, rivers, and reservoirs as well as 106,328 hectares of freshwater swamplands and 14,531 hectares of freshwater fishponds, have tremendous potential for Udang grow-out.
The majority of the farmed species in these regions are tilapia and bangus. Additionally caught are catfish, mudfish, and freshwater prawns.
By encouraging farmer-cooperators to adopt shrimp culture to increase their revenue, Dagdagan claimed that BFAR is continuing to promote new technologies.
