Baguio’s education fund enrolls 254 underprivileged youngsters in classes.

Over 200 public elementary and secondary students here have benefited from the local government’s “Gawad Lingap” initiative, which has kept them from quitting school because of financial hardship.

Dr. Federico Martin, the Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) of Baguio under the Department of Education (DepEd), stated in a text message on Friday that “Gawad Lingap rescues learners at risk of leaving out owing to poverty.”

Martin claimed that the scheme ensures that students will continue to attend class while providing them with a fare and an allowance that they may utilize to raise their academic performance.

He claimed that under the proposal, a qualified primary student would receive a PHP500 monthly allowance and a PHP1,000 stipend for high school students.

Martin stated that once a pupil is added as a recipient, the financial aid will continue until they graduate from high school.

He said that 145 high school kids and 109 elementary students are currently among the program’s beneficiaries.

“The General Education Fund is funding the PHP2 million budget for 2022 and another for 2023 (program) execution,” he said.

According to him, more people are anticipated to apply for and use the program, and the allotment is anticipated to rise yearly.

The Baguio City Council passed Ordinance 7-22 the same year, which served as the foundation for the 2022 start of the Gawad Lingap program.

According to Vice Mayor Faustino Olowan in a separate interview, the rule helps eligible students pay for their regular school fees, which attempts to lower absences and address the worrying dropout rates.

DepEd-Baguio records reveal a dropout rate of.55 percent, or 355 pupils, from the 64,472 enrollment in all public elementary and high schools in the city for the school year 2021–2022, according to Jordan Habbiling, the Baguio City council’s information officer.
