According to US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby, military operations in Ukraine are expected to last for months.

At a news briefing, Kirby stated, “We absolutely expect over the next couple of months that the Russians aren’t just going to throw up their hands and stop or just dig in.”

“I won’t comment on the exact tactical strategies of [Russia]. In certain regions of Ukraine, they have continued to attack, said Kirby, adding that in other areas, “they have basically adopted what we would refer to as a ‘defense in depth’.”

On Friday, US government officials announced the delivery of self-propelled howitzers and track-mounted Bradley infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine as part of a new $3 billion aid package.

On February 17, 2022, the situation along the line of engagement in the Donbass deteriorated.

The Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) claimed the Ukrainian military’s most intense bombardments at the time, which damaged civilian infrastructure and resulted in casualties among civilians.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, declared on February 21, 2022, that Moscow was acknowledging the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics’ right to independence.

With their leaders, Russia signed agreements of friendship, collaboration, and reciprocal aid.

Beginning in 2014, Moscow recognized the Donetsk and Lugansk Regions as the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics within the bounds of the DPR and LPR constitutions.

In response to a request for aid from the leaders of the Donbass republics, Russian President Putin declared on February 24, 2022, that he had chosen to conduct a special military operation in Ukraine.

To liberate their areas under Kiev’s authority, the DPR and the LPR started an operation.
