Over 88K devotees attend the prelude to the Black Nazarene festivities.

The first events leading up to the Monday observance of the Feast of the Black Nazarene were attended by more than 88,000 believers on Saturday.

Over 39,000 people have reportedly visited the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, commonly known as Quiapo Church, in Manila as of 6 p.m., according to the Quiapo Church Command Post (QCCP).

In the meantime, almost 48,000 devotees traveled to Quirino Grandstand in Manila to participate in the “pagpupugay,” or viewing and touching of the image, which has taken the place of the customary “pahalik” (kissing), which aims to stop the coronavirus disease from spreading.

Because Covid-19 still poses a threat, the Walk of Faith was held in a place of the customary “Traslacion,” during which the figure of the Black Nazarene is transported from the Quirino Grandstand to the Basilica on an andas (carriage).

The most recent Traslacion, which drew about 3.3 million spectators and lasted 16 hours and 35 minutes, was held in January 2020.

It will continue till the feast day on January 9.

On Sunday following the midnight service to be celebrated by Fr. Rufino Sescon Jr., rector of Quiapo Church, a “Walk of Faith” procession without the image will be held from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church.

At least 5 million followers are anticipated to participate in the “Walk of Faith,” which will be condensed because it will only pass through 20 locations, according to the organizers.
