After the Bulacan dams released surplus water, more than 2K people were evacuated.
Due to flooding caused by the Friday and Saturday discharge of extra water from the Angat and Ipo dams, more than 2,000 people from three low-lying barangays in this town were forced to leave.
More than 90% of Metro Manila’s potable water supply comes from two dams located in this area.
The Bulacan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office states that the Angat and Ipo dams started releasing extra water on Friday at 8 a.m. and continued till Saturday.
Angat Dam still had three gates open at 8.5 meters at 6 a.m. on Saturday, although Ipo Dam had six gates open at 9.2 meters.
Compared to its typical water level of 212 meters, the Angat Dam’s water level as of 8 a.m. is 214.80 meters.
The water level of the Ipo Dam is 101.04 meters above its spilling level of 101.00 meters, while that of the Bustos Dam in the province’s Bustos town is 17.42 meters above its spilling level of 17.00 meters.
Barangays Matictic, San Mateo, and Poblacion were affected by floods after the Angat river overflowed due to the release of extra water from the Ipo and Angat dams, according to Grace Osido, information officer for the municipal government of Norzagaray.
In an interview, Osido stated that 2,007 people—including 806 children—were affected by the floodwaters and taken to evacuation facilities in the aforementioned areas.
The three evacuation centers, or one center in each of the affected barangays, are providing temporary refuge to the displaced people.
The evacuees received aid supplies from the Norzagaray municipal authority, which is run by Mayor Elena Germar.
The head of the Bulacan Provincial Public Affairs Office, Katrina Anne Bernardo Balingat, added that “Bustos dam has to release water since the water releases from Angat and Ipo dams find their way to the former and finally drain out to the Manila Bay.”
She further stated that the provincial government is still compiling data on all province inhabitants impacted by the dams’ water releases.
The discharge of extra water was caused by Thursday’s continuous downpours into the reservoirs, which were principally brought on by two meteorological systems.
