Airports in PH are considering hiring an extra 1,500 screeners.
An official said Wednesday that all of the airports in the country need an extra 1,500 screeners.
Over 2,500 people work for the Office for Transportation Security (OTS). At the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, there are more than 1,000 of them.
“At the moment, there are three people at each X-ray checkpoint. The best number is five, “In an interview with the Philippine News Agency, Ma.O. Aplasca, who is in charge of OTS, said this.
Just in the domestic area of the NAIA terminal, there are six checkpoints. Aplasca said that the X-ray machine for bags and the walk-through scanner should be run by five people. He said that busy airports like the NAIA are open all the time.
The OTS can’t hire more people because it doesn’t have enough money. So, the OTS wants the Department of Budget and Management to give it more money.
“We couldn’t hire more people because we didn’t have enough money to pay their salaries. The OTS budget for 2023 is just enough to pay for maintenance, salaries, and other operating costs “Aplasca said.
The official also said that only about 500 of the 2,500 people who work for OTS hold plantilla posts.
Aplasca also said that the decision to get rid of initial screening will be made in every airport in the country.
But this will not be used in the airports in Mindanao until later.
Aplasca said, “We won’t do this yet in Mindanao, especially in airports in Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro, because of post-threat security requirements and after consulting with local security forces.”
He said that getting rid of the first screening step would start in airports in Luzon and the Visayas.
