This week, it was announced that physicians in Canada used ultrasonography to administer the first chemotherapy treatment ever for an incurable brain tumor in a child.

The surgery, carried out as part of a clinical trial at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, is intended to improve care for children with terminal brain tumors.

The blood-brain barrier, a protective network of cells that can block medical professionals from accessing and treating certain sections of the brain, is the issue with treating brain tumors, according to physicians.

In a groundbreaking medical procedure, scientists employed concentrated ultrasound technology to temporarily break down the tumor-treating barrier with sound waves.

“Focused ultrasound is a novel, non-invasive method for more efficiently administering chemotherapy to the tumor, “The Harquail Centre for Neuromodulation at Sunnybrook released a statement through its director, Dr. Nir Lipsman.

“We anticipate that this ongoing research will advance the development of medicines that can help alter the course of the disease, said Lipsman.

Its official name is Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). The most typical type of brain tumor in children under the age of 15 is this one.

The only available treatment for DIPG is radiation, which, according to Dr. James Rutka, director of the Arthur and Sonia Labatt Brain Tumour Research Centre, can temporarily halt the growth of the tumor but has no long-term consequences.

“A promising medicine delivery method that is assisting us in breaking through the blood-brain barrier is focused ultrasound technology. This trial’s execution will assist us in developing fresh, cutting-edge therapy trajectories for kids with DIPG, he claimed.

Ten patients with DIPG between the ages of five and 18 will participate in additional research.
