Out of 1.4 million domestic workers, only 35,00 have employment contracts: DOLE
The low percentage of domestic workers (kasambahay) in the nation with employment contracts alarmed the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday.
“Only 2.5 percent of the 1.4 million kasambahays (house helps) have an employment contract. Only about 35,000 people have signed employment contracts, compared to 1.36 million “In a Laging Handa briefing on Friday, Director Ahmma Charisma Lobrin-Satumba of the DOLE Bureau of Workers with Special Concerns (BWSC) stated.
The number of domestic employees who pay into the Social Security System (SSS), Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), and Home Development Mutual Fund is also quite low, she continued (Pag-Ibig).
“We are especially concerned about the underrepresentation of social protection services. We discovered that only 8.3% of the 1.4 million people are covered “She spoke.
The labor official stated that they are eager to step up their efforts to ensure that Republic Act 10361, often known as the Kasambahay Law, is followed.
We will step up our campaigning, she said, “so that both employers and kasambahays will be aware of this.”
A written employment contract between the employer and the domestic worker must be signed before the service can begin, according to Section 11 of the statute.
In accordance with the legislation, a domestic worker who has completed at least one month of service is entitled to SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-Ibig coverage, with the employer bearing the cost of the premiums.
Former president Benigno Aquino III signed it in July 2012, and it became effective in June 2013.
