NegOr continues to sell onions for P600 to P750 per kilo.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in this area reported on Friday that the cost of onions in the province of Negros Oriental has not yet undergone any appreciable shift in recent weeks and is still quite high.

According to a partial report from the DTI-Negros Oriental, as of January 20, local red onion prices ranged from PHP660 to PHP750 per kilogram, while import costs ranged from PHP490 to PHP580. White onion prices ranged from PHP360 to PHP400 per kilogram.

Even the “sibuying,” a type of little onion, which costs PHP400 per kilo, is pricey.

According to Nimfa Virtucio, provincial director of DTI-Negros Oriental, “These are supermarket prices, which are higher by around PHP100 per kilo compared to those offered at the wet or public markets.”

The monitoring team is still on the ground collecting the most recent pricing information.

Every Friday, she added, her office monitors prices in accordance with a memo issued by the higher office at the president’s request, Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Onions were priced the same over the holidays, but the DTI’s surveillance on January 6 revealed a slight decrease when it was sold for between PHP500 and PHP600 per kg, she noted.

Red onions sold in wet markets had an SRP (Suggested Retail Price) of PHP250 per kilo as of the first week of January thanks to DA Circular No. 12, which was published by the Department of Agriculture on December 29.

According to Virtucio, the DTI has no ability to set a new ceiling unless the higher office instructs them to do so; it can only monitor prices.
