Discover the vast cultural and historical diversity of Chinese New Year: PBBM
On Sunday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos—including Filipino-Chinese—to consider the “cultural and historical richness” that the country’s Chinese New Year celebrations have brought about.
Marcos referred to the Chinese New Year celebration as “a new dawn that reflects our unlimited desires for prosperity for ourselves and our community” in his statement on occasion.
Such celebrations, according to him, enable all participants to recognize the bonds that unite many cultures as “a family, community, and nation.”
Let’s explore the cultural and historical diversity that has shaped our nation into the colorful and dynamic society it is today as we commemorate this anniversary, Marcos stated.
The “shared thread” that strengthens the ties of Filipino and Chinese family and friendship, which he claimed allowed the former “withstand all adversities and endure ordeals that have come our way,” was another thing he urged the public to pay attention to.
In order to secure the good fortune, joy, and harmony that will serve as our guiding light throughout rewriting our shared history, he said, “I am truly delighted to begin this new chapter with you all—especially with our Filipino-Chinese communities in the country.
The event, according to Marcos, should serve as a reminder of the “blessings we have at hand” and a catalyst for people to “practice deeper compassion for those who have less in life.”
In order for our expectations for a better future to materialize, he urged Filipinos to work together and be revitalized by a spirit of unity.
On January 16, Marcos delivered a video address to the Chinese-Filipino community in which he promised a “better tomorrow” for both China and the Philippines.
“Let’s welcome the Year of the Rabbit with optimism and high aspirations, knowing that a better tomorrow is just around the corner. “A better tomorrow built on cooperation, peace, and harmony,” stated Marcos.
Huang Xilian, the Chinese ambassador to the Philippines, threw a reception to celebrate the Chinese New Year on January 16.
Vice President Sara Duterte, Marcos, and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos were some of the dignitaries that made well-wishes during the occasion.
The Lunar New Year, commonly referred to as Chinese New Year, is one of the holidays that China and Chinese communities around the world celebrate with festive decorations, lion and dragon dances, and vibrant fireworks.
Although it doesn’t have a set day on the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese New Year usually falls between January 21 and February 20.
The Year of the Rabbit, which represents joy and prosperity, begins on Sunday, January 22, this year.
The world’s oldest Chinatown, Binondo, where many members of the Filipino-Chinese community celebrate the Chinese New Year, was recognized in 1954 as a permanent Chinese immigration colony under the Spanish administration.
Amenah Pangandaman, secretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), concurred with Marcos that Chinese New Year serves as “a reminder of the unity, deep friendship, and excellent relations between Filipinos and Chinese.”
The Lunar New Year celebration in the Philippines, according to her, “underscores our profound relationship that has been fostered for many centuries and continues to be an intrinsic part of our collective identity as a unique and diverse nation.”
She also expressed her gratitude to the Chinese-Filipino population for their enormous contribution to the socioeconomic development of the nation.
“May we work hard to further deepen our ties in the sectors of trade, investments, tourism, and cultural exchanges as we enter into a new chapter and celebrate the hope of a new beginning,” she added.
