The United States and the Philippines may conduct joint patrols to improve “interoperability” between the two allies, according to Jose Manuel Romualdez, the Philippine ambassador to the United States, who made the statement on Thursday.

The ambassador claimed that although Manila and the US have always had an agreement for marine patrols, it was “never truly executed” legally.

This has been discussed for a while, and at some point, he said, “our defense institution and the US defense establishment will present an operational plan to enable these combined patrols.”

He claimed that these actions involve not only Washington, DC, but also nations like Japan and “maybe Australia” as well as other partners.

Romualdez emphasized that maintaining peace and stability and ensuring that Filipinos may fish in their own waters are Manila’s major goals in the West Philippine Sea.

“Our agreement with the US is still in effect, and if doing so is necessary for us to maintain our position of maritime security defense, we will do so. The exercise to be carried out in conjunction with the US is still under discussion, according to Ma. Teresita Daza, spokesman for Foreign Affairs, in a separate press conference.
