India introduces the “first” intranasal COVID-19 vaccination.
The “first” intranasal Covid-19 vaccine, created by regional pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech, was made available in India on Thursday.
The iNcovacc vaccination was introduced by Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on the 74th Republic Day of the nation.
According to a statement from the Health Ministry on Thursday, “iNcovacc is the only intranasal Covid-19 vaccine in the world to get approval for the primary 2-dose schedule, as well as as a heterologous booster dose.”
It is a “historic achievement and a monument to the innovative zeal of our scientists,” Mandaviya added, describing it as a “powerful exhibition of India’s research and innovation capability under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.”
The vaccine is affordable and doesn’t need “syringes, needles, alcohol wipes, bandages, etc., saving expenditures linked to procurement, distribution, storage, and biomedical waste disposal, that is often necessary for injectable vaccines,” according to the ministry.
It makes use of a vector-based platform that can be quickly upgraded with new versions to enable rapid large-scale production. It is the perfect vaccine to combat future infectious diseases because of its quick response times, cost-effectiveness, and simplicity of intranasal administration, according to the statement.
The vaccination deployment is anticipated to start in private hospitals that have placed advance purchases, according to a statement from the company.
The company stated that it has an “initial manufacturing capacity of several million doses per annum, and this can be scaled up to a billion doses as required,” and that it is priced at Indian rupees 325/dose (approximately $4) for large volume government procurement and at Indian rupees 800 (approximately $10) for the private market.
The number of open cases throughout the nation as of Wednesday was 1,922.
The weekly positive rate is 0.08%, according to the government.
The national immunization campaign has so far provided over 2.2 billion doses of vaccine.
