PH onion production to increase with ORION, with help from farmers: DA

The Optimization and Resiliency In the Onion Industry Network (ORION) program will be introduced by the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday in an effort to increase domestic output and assistance for regional growers.

The DA claimed in a statement that the ORION program is required to address earlier issues with onion supply, which had an impact on increasing retail prices.

The DA stated at its meeting with various stakeholders that “ORION aspires to foster a competitive, resilient, and profitable onion business offering high quality, safe, economical, and sustainable supply of onion to fulfill increasing domestic demand.”

The ORION program will support farmers by integrating cutting-edge farming techniques and more easily accessible loans.

“Providing simple access to credit loans that can be utilized for the creation of facilities and the acquisition of equipment is one of the strategies and initiatives that will be implemented. For production and market integration, farmer clusters and associations will also be set up, according to the statement.

Innovative farming methods and value-adding procedures will also be promoted under ORION in order to increase output and revenue, it was said.

The DA will also include the development of a centralized database that will be expected to track the updated onion data nationally in order to ensure efficiency in supply and marketing monitoring.

The DA stated that the department would keep up its enhanced distribution plan for production and marketing support so that the industry could expand and make money.

In addition to this, communication with the local price coordinating council of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will also be important for keeping tabs on market pricing.

Given that the nation lost around 100,000 metric tons of onions due to a lack of cold storage facilities last year, ORION will also address losses in domestic production.

The DA stated that the plan’s implementation will increase onion plantations’ productivity and efficiency through PhilGAP certification, decrease pre- and post-harvest losses, enhance product distribution and logistics, and guarantee a steady supply in the local market.

The agency had announced its intention to begin construction of four onion-producing regions’ four cold storage facilities this year.

In the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan) regions, these amenities are anticipated to increase.

With a capacity to hold up to 20,000 bags, each facility is anticipated to cost PHP40 million.
