Alfredo Pascual’s ability to run the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) was acknowledged by members of the Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday as they unanimously confirmed his ad interim appointment.

Secretary Pascual is the ideal candidate for the position, according to CA’s Committee on Trade and Industry Chairperson Representative Ferjenel Biron, who also endorsed Pascual’s selection. The country’s economic existence depends on the effective and efficient operation of DTI.

“His academic prowess, substantial work experience, and achievements as he held high-ranking positions and performed significant roles as manager, economist, administrator, teacher, adviser, and leader throughout his career are best measures of his competence to discharge the duties of the secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry,” Biron said in the CA plenary.

He said, “Many leaders in the business and scientific communities across the nation have publicly endorsed his confirmation today.

Pascual held a number of posts in the public and private sectors while maintaining his status as a respected professor, a top-tier international banker, and a financial expert.

He served on the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) global panel on financial water infrastructure for 19 years, during which time he was required to actively participate in consultations with financiers, bankers, policymakers, academics, NGOs, and CSOs in Manila, Washington, DC, The Hague, Johannesburg, Paris, and London.

From February 2011 to 2017, Pascual served as the Board of Regents of UP Diliman’s president and co-chair.

He was the Institute of Corporate Directors’ president and CEO from January 2018 to December 2019.
