DMW is instructed to advocate for no placement charge for OFWs going to Japan.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) was urged by Speaker Martin Romualdez on Friday to stop collecting placement fees in connection with the hiring and employment of Filipino workers going to Japan.

Romualdez made the request after discussions with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is now on a five-day visit to Tokyo, during which Japanese businesses and employers pledged to hire more Filipinos, notably sailors, professionals, and unskilled labor.

He suggested that the DMW seek to eliminate placement fees for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who are applying to work in Japan.

He claimed that although certain skilled workers and trainees under the Technical Internship Training Program are exempt from paying placement fees, other Filipino job seekers, such as professionals and highly trained workers, are still being requested to do so.

Romualdez, a member of the President’s delegation, said, “I hope that the DMW can engage the recruiting sector and Japanese companies on how to make Japan a 100% no placement charge labor market.”

The House leader, meanwhile, expressed satisfaction with the way Japanese firms treat their Filipino workers.

He remarked, “We are glad to hear directly from our OFWs in Japan on how much their employers regard them, and vice-versa.

Additionally, he requested that people “report exorbitant and illegal costs” to the DMW and the Migrant Workers Offices in Osaka and Tokyo. This was directed at both Japanese workers as well as job seekers in Manila.

In order to empower the government to pursue and punish individuals who collect unlawful fees, Congress will cooperate with DMW to enhance current rules and regulations, Romualdez stated.
