Urging ASEAN and Indian youth leaders to contribute to world peace and prosperity

A representative of ASEAN urged Southeast Asian and Indian youth leaders to use their skills and abilities to enhance peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region in order to make a significant difference.

As our current and future leaders, the youth must develop their skills and capabilities in order to realize the shared goals of ASEAN and India. Only then will they be able to advance peace and prosperity in the region and beyond, said ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn in his virtual message at the 4th ASEAN-India Youth Summit’s opening ceremony on Sunday night.

He said that the four-day ASEAN-India Summit, with the subject “Strengthening ASEAN-India Partnership in the Indo-Pacific,” could provide a forum for 175 young leaders “to discuss thoughts and perspectives and other significant challenges affecting our world today.”

The speaker said, “To our youth delegates, I would like to emphasize to you that with your continued engagement and passion to make a difference, you have an opportunity and in fact, a golden opportunity to make possible changes across Asia-Pacific and of course across your areas.

Kao commended the Indian government for hosting the ASEAN-India Summit in cooperation with the India Foundation and the ASEAN Foundation, in particular the city of Hyderabad and the Ministry of External Affairs.

“I hope you will look back on this occasion as a transformative experience that gives you the possibility to help improve the governance of the people of ASEAN and India. I hope the meeting goes well and that the talk is beneficial,” he remarked.

Maj. Gen. Dhruv Katoch, director of the India Foundation, hopes that via engagement, the youth leaders can create friendships that “are truly unbreakable” and “last a lifetime.”

G. Kishan Reddy, India’s Union Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Development of the North Eastern Region suggested that the summit could look into ways to work together to help youth gain knowledge and skills in cutting-edge fields like digital technology, sustainability in economic relations, financial inclusion, and environmental protection.

In his opening remarks, Reddy stated that the ASEAN-India Youth Summit was a step toward facilitating more future events and socio-cultural interactions between the nations in this region in order to further enhance the ideals of tolerance, pluralism, and diversity.

Young leaders in politics, media, think tanks, education, science, and technology will meet to discuss and come up with ideas for how to advance a number of areas, such as good governance and regional development, entrepreneurship and skill development, digital partnerships for the 21st century, connectivity between ASEAN and India, and the promotion of cultural and people-to-people ties.

Eight young leaders from the Philippines participated in the summit, which was intended to foster a shared vision for greater regional cooperation on economic and security-related issues.

These individuals include businesswoman Trizia Ann Tingson Magalino, Sangguniang Barangay member Eufelu Badiang Anino from Davao de Oro, Sangguniang Kabataan chairperson Jhansien Galvez Malapit of Cebu City, Mart Greggy Jones Callao Aying of the National Youth Commission’s Mental Health Youth Hub, SK chairperson Michael Christophe Racimo Agustin from Ilocos Norte,

Former National Union of Students of the Philippines president Abellar claimed that the summit will provide them a chance to talk with other young leaders from ASEAN and India on topics that are relevant to young people everywhere.

“These concerns range from jobs to education to internet connectivity. Due to the participation of NGOs (non-governmental organizations), the government, and youth networks, the contingents are extremely diversified. In a media interview, he observed, “That kind of diversity can be a wellspring of creative ideas from among the kids.

Other ASEAN members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam in addition to the Philippines.
