255K indigents will receive P2-B medical assistance by 2022: PCSO

In response to more than 255,000 patient requests across the nation, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) last year distributed more than PHP2 billion in medical aid.

In a statement released on Wednesday, PCSO chairperson Junie Cua said, “This is in accordance with the continuous efforts of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to improve and develop the nation’s health care system and sustain the accomplishments reached in 2021 to completely reopen the economy.”

According to its 2022 accomplishment report, the agency provided PHP2.012 billion in aid to 255,520 impoverished and financially unable people last year under the Medical Assistance Program (MAP).

According to Cua, “True to our purpose of providing responsive assistance to eligible recipients and beneficiaries, the PCSO has assisted hundreds of thousands of underprivileged patients in managing expensive medical expenses arising from treatment or confinement.”

In addition to other health facilities, the aid was given in collaboration with public and commercial hospitals, pharmacies, and other businesses.

Regular MAP through PCSO offices, where 210,731 beneficiaries received PHP1.395 billion in aid, and Medical Access in Malasakit Centers (MAM), where 44,789 beneficiaries received PHP617.3 million in aid, make up the total amount of support.

The Malasakit Center Act (RA 11463) was signed in 2019 with the intention of creating Malasakit Centers in hospitals managed by the Department of Health (DOH) countrywide. By the end of 2022, the PCSO was able to set up 129 PCSO desks in 153 Malasakit Centers.

Cua said that the PCSO had received 131,754 requests for financial aid totaling PHP1.28 billion for the expense of confinement, followed by 84,535 requests for erythropoietin (a dialysis injection) and 23,624 requests for chemotherapy medications (PHP241.8 million).

“If you’re a member of the group, this is what you’ve been told to say: ‘Pasanin ng ating mga kababayang mahihirap na nagkakasakit at nangangailangan ng tulong pinansyal'” (If we look closely, these are the three heaviest burdens of our poor countrymen who get sick and need financial assistance). We are pleased to report that the MAP has allowed us to assist many of our poor kababayans, she remarked.

Specialty medications, hemodialysis, laboratory (blood chemistry), diagnostic, and imaging procedures, as well as implantable devices and medical devices, are additional services that are covered by the program.

“Ang PCSO ay laging handa sa pagtulong sa kapwa, maaasahan niyo po na sa ilalim ng administrasyon ni Pangulong Marcos. (Be confident that the PCSO will always be prepared to assist others under President Marcos’ administration.) Inaasahan po natin na sa mga darating na panahon, mas marami pa ang ating matutulungan sa pamamagitan ng mga innovations na magpapabilis sa paghatid ng mas epektibong serbisyo sa ating By improvements that will hasten the provision of more efficient services to our compatriots in need, we hope to be able to assist more people in the future,” Cua continued.
