The fourth consecutive month of declining Bacolod power rates

Since December, the cost of residential electricity in this city and its five nearby communities has declined on average, with the March billing rate falling by PHP1.2040 per kilowatt hour (kWh).

The Central Negros Electric Cooperative (Ceneco), which has two power supply agreements with Palm Concepcion Power Corp. (PCPC), said in a statement that the decrease β€” from PHP14.8756 per kWh in February to PHP13.6716 this month β€” can be attributed to the decrease in fuel cost and extended discount of PCPC.

The change was applauded on Monday by Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, who had before questioned why the same electricity supplier had two different rates in the November invoice.

We’ve observed a steady decline, and I hope this continues, he said.

Benitez stated that the home power rate decreased by PHP2.63 per kWh in March 2023 from a peak of PHP16.2972 per kWh in November 2022.

The cost per kWh dropped from PHP16.2972 in November to PHP16.20 in December, a PHP0.0966 decrease.

In January, the cost of electricity dropped by PHP1.0949 to PHP15.1057 per kWh.

The price was PHP14.8756 per kWh in January, down from PHP0.230 in the previous month.

Benitez claimed that he has been “actively pursuing options on how to bring down electricity rates in the city” since October of last year.

I questioned the two different tariffs in November 2022 coming from the same power generator in a letter I sent to the Energy Regulatory Commission and Ceneco (in January of last year),” he continued.

According to the mayor, given the significant difference between the two tariffs, it is worthwhile to investigate any potential power market misuse.

This would “require a revision of the electricity supply agreements between CENECO and PCPC by the ERC,” he stated.

The cities of Bago, Talisay, and Silay, as well as the municipalities of Murcia and Don Salvador Benedicto, are included in Ceneco’s coverage area in addition to Bacolod, the provincial capital of Negros Occidental.
