According to a health professional, the 19% rise in Covid-19 instances over the past week is not causing concern.

Dr. Edsel Salvaa, an infectious disease expert, stated at a televised public briefing that the healthcare utilization rate, which is still around 20% overall, is more significant than the number of new infections since it shows how well-prepared the nation is to admit severe and critical cases.

The Department of Health previously reported that daily infections increased to 167 in the most recent week (March 13–19) from 140 infections in the previous week (March 5–12).

In addition, 1,171 new cases and 63 confirmed deaths for the previous week were reported.

The number of instances, which is what we’re looking at every day, is still around 200 each day, and even the active cases have been below 10,000 for a very long time, he added. “I don’t think it’s a cause for alarm,” he said.

Salvaa clarified that the mask requirement is optional, with the exception of places like hospitals and public transportation where physical distance is not monitored.

“In hospitals, we’re not just looking at Covid but also flu and other respiratory illnesses where use of masks can help,” he said. “Sa hospitals, hindi lang naman Covid ang tinitingnan natin na mga kaso doon kasama diyan ang mga trangkaso and other respiratory illnesses.”

Salvaa also noted that as Filipinos grow accustomed to greater mobility, they are becoming more selective and shrewd about facemask use.

“In fact, mas maraming tao are out there right now, and there are many cases of them, so I believe that Covid is an endemic disease,” (more people are going out right now and the cases will remain low – so, I think slowly Covid is becoming endemic).
